Read more about how we spend your kind donations.......
We are a registered UK charity (number 245415) and in terms of our finances, we are self funded and operate independently from both our religious order and from the local diocese. We are not a parish church either, although we are fortunate to have a strong and loyal congregation and we welcome many members of the public to pray with us throughout the year.
We are very grateful for the donations and other help such as volunteering people already give. This really helps us. Thank you.
Having said that, whilst we do currently have sources of income, our costs are kept in check as much as possible but are inevitably high, even when we try to apply for grant aid and other such external funding. We need to pay to support our monks in their daily lives and the many visitors we welcome throughout the year as well as maintaining and conserving the Abbey Church, monastery and grounds. By way of example of our day to day revenue expenditure, the most competitive buildings and contents insurance quote we paid recently was for £23,000 per annum.
We must now also act wisely for the future by investing in recruiting and, if successful, training new monks to ensure our monastery can continue, which also means converting our antiquated novice monk and other guest bedrooms at a cost of around £50,000.
Then, and very importantly, we very much want to act as responsible custodians for the future by maintaining and repairing our Grade II listed buildings and their contents with the relevant permissions in place to do so. This is some considerable task.
The stonework around our buildings put in place in the 1890s is crumbling in many areas with estimates in the region of £100,000 to fully restore this on a phased basis over several years. The list of building repair works needed does not stop here.
We have a capital programme too, which seeks to further our work into the future by building a multi-million pound guest and meeting centre with library.
You can help us with even the smallest donation or other support, as can leaving us money in your will with, in some cases, its potential tax advantages to your estate (please seek independent financial advice about this). We also welcome corporate support from businesses. You can find out more about how our money is used, please see here.
We remember our benefactors and hold a regular Mass for their intentions.
Thank you.
