The brown scapular is a religious garment made of two pieces of brown wool, worn over the shoulders. It is a sign of love, trust, and commitment to Mary, the Mother of God, who gave it to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite leader, in 1251. It is also a promise of her protection and favour, especially at the hour of death. It is a "universal devotion" for all Catholics.
